This Day in History...

March 29th, 1987 - Twenty years later I can still see Hulk Hogan hoisting up the enormous Andre the Giant and body slamming him to the canvas. WrestleMania III was held in front of an amazing 93,173 people packed into the Pontiac Silverdome. To this day, it is the largest indoor attendance for any event in history. The following are a few of the highlights (other than Hogan vs Andre) from what many still see as the greatest WrestleMania of all time...

*While this was the only time in WrestleMania history that the Tag Team titles were not on the line, there were five separate tag team matches. Among these included Greg 'Hammer' Valentine turning on longtime partner Brutus Beefcake, in order to form an alliance with Dino Bravo. Also, King Kong Bundy and Hillbilly Jim battled one another with the help of two midgets each. One of Bundy's partners was the now legendary Little Tokyo.

*Rowdy Roddy Piper defeated Adrian Adonis in a 'Hair vs Hair' match which saw the birth of Beefcake's Barber persona and was supposed to be Piper's final match. Although, as we now know, he would return several times over the past twenty years up until his recent severe illness. Later on in the evening the Junkyard Dog lost to Harley Race in a 'Loser Must Bow' match.

*The best match of the night was the classic Intercontinental Championship match between Ricky 'Dragon' Steamboat and Randy 'Macho Man' Savage. Steamboat was triumphant, but would only hold the title for a few months before having to drop it to the Honky Tonk Man after an alleged dispute with Vince McMahon and the powers that be. The Dragon would remain in the WWF for less than another year, never regaining any titles, while Macho Man would continue his illustrious career by winning the WWF Heavyweight Championship one year later in a tournament at WrestleMania IV.

Not just the greatest Wrestlemania, but perhaps the greatest sporting event of all time.
